As many of you know, an important part of the village helping us raise our family has been impacted by recent immigration operations in Atlanta. Because of what's happened, this family is now facing loss of an income, legal bills and other costs related to their situation. We are doing everything we can to support them but because several generous friends have asked, we are setting this up to provide an avenue to support them. To help protect their family we are doing our best to keep this effort in close circulation to close family and friends and will abbreviate their names here.
Background
C and R have been married for about two years, since just before we moved home from London and started working with C. She was born in the US but R came to the country when he was a small child and has been going through the immigration process since, including formally pursuing citizenship via marriage. He qualifies for DACA but due to gaps in paperwork that has not been honored by the system. C & R are raising a wonderful and kind 9 year old daughter together who has become very close friends with our kids.
Incident
Four weeks ago while on the way to work, C & R stopped to pick up one of R's colleagues. C noticed two large SUVs at the edge of the neighborhood; after picking him up, ICE agents in the SUVs pulled C over and stated that they were 'looking for someone'. They asked everyone out of the car and to show papers; C and R had their documents in order but the colleague did not. However, due to R's status the ICE agents took both men into custody. He was taken to Stewart Detention Facility in west Georgia; conditions there are known to be very difficult, the system is very challenging to navigate and information is hard to come by.
Current Situation
Lawyers have since helped us get a better grasp on the situation - a huge thank you to all who have helped us network our way to some great people. His original hearing was scheduled for April 2 but has now been delayed to April 9. In his 4 weeks in detainment, he is restricted from talking to other detainees and is allowed outside 2 hours PER WEEK (1 hour Saturday and Sunday).
Ask
If you are inclined to support, it will make a big difference for their family. Legal fees are estimated close to $5,000 and loss of income will be substantially more. Anything you feel comfortable contributing will go a long way toward easing their stress in an incredibly challenging time. Thank you all for your consideration and support.
I have permission from C.R. to withdraw the donated funds and send them directly to her outside of GoFundMe.
