My top surgery is in just 10 days, so imagine my surprise when the hospital told me that lateral torso liposuction would be $6000, not the $2000 I expected when I opened this GoFundMe in June! They had told me liposuction costs $2000+, and I interpreted that as the type of liposuction I need started at that price. Unfortunately, I was wrong!
The government covers the cost of a mastectomy, but I have to pay out of pocket for liposuction "contouring" to get rid of the side-boob tissue. This is not covered by my private insurance either.
Here's why liposuction is so important for a gender affirming surgery:
- It removes the breast tissue that extends right under the arms and around to the back, reducing the hourglass curve
- Liposuction helps prevent "dog ears" where a point or lump of skin pokes out from the body
- Surgical revisions are not covered and I have to pay the entire cost myself if I'm not happy later. Best to get it done well the first time!
