Help cover rescue costs for two stray chihuahuas

Donation protected
On Thursday, January 13, my husband and I took our 13-year-old mini poodle on a midday walk and came across two stray chihuahuas in the Sheffield Point neighborhood in Regent Park, Fort Mill. They were cold, dirty, and hungry. We brought them home, tried to clean them up, and reported them to York County Animal Control.

That afternoon, we got them appointments for stray wellness exams at Banfield Pet Hospital. The vet estimated that they had been surviving outside for up to a couple of weeks. They weighed only 3.3 pounds (short hair, girl) and 4 pounds (long hair, boy), and the vet wasn't sure whether the boy would make it because of how dehydrated he was. They tested negative for parasites and came home with deworming medication, which we gave them daily for 5 days. Legally, the vet could not give them any vaccines at the time of the appointments since we were not their owners.

On Friday, January 14, we took to Facebook to attempt to locate the owner of these two babies. Our post was shared over 140 times across multiple local Facebook groups and the Lost & Found Cats & Dogs of Your County, SC Facebook page, but no owner came forward. The stray hold expired on Wednesday, January 19.

On Thursday, January 20, we took the pups to the Central Carolinas Animal Hospital in Rock Hill, SC, to begin to get them up-to-date on their vaccines. We were happy to see their weight had improved to 4 pounds and 4.8 pounds in just a week! They each received their 1-year rabies and bordetella vaccines. They will have a follow-up visit in approximately 3 weeks to receive an additional vaccine.

The pups will have their first grooming appointments on Saturday, January 22, and they are scheduled for their spay/neuter appointments at SnipWell Spay Neuter & Wellness Clinic on Monday, February 7. After they are fixed, we will help them find their "furever" home together. We will not separate them and will only consider a home willing to accept both babies into their home.

We created this GoFundMe to help cover the (very unexpected) out-of-pocket costs we've incurred while getting these babies the care they need. I am listing below the actual expenses we have paid. Our costs have exceeded our goal of $450, but we are not out to make money off of these sweet babies. We are only hoping offset some of the costs we have paid (and will pay) to ensure the pups have received the care they deserve while they're on their way to their "furever" home. If our GoFundMe raises more than enough to cover our expenses, we will donate any remaining funds to the York County Humane Society or a local animal rescue. We will continue to share updates as they are available!
