Penny lived a truly wonderful life, and from the very beginning, I aimed to build a life that would make her the happiest dog. Together we traveled from city to city, and everywhere she went, she left a little piece of joy and inspiration with everyone she met. Penny was simply radiant. She woke up every day ready to play, run, and cuddle. She ate well, chased her ball like it was her life’s mission, explored every trail and body of water she could find, and proudly performed her tricks for a treat. When she turned 13, we threw her a celebration worthy of the dog she was, surrounded by her favorite people and fellow furry friends. Looking back, it really was one of the greatest days of her life.
It wasn’t until last Saturday morning that she finally let us in on the pain she had quietly been carrying. What began as a normal morning turned into something terrifying—her pee was bright red and full of blood. In a panic, we rushed from one animal ER to the next, eventually ending up at the animal hospital where she received overnight care, multiple blood transfusions, and a CT scan that delivered every pet owner’s worst nightmare. The vet sat with us gently and told us that our resilient, perfect girl had been living with a significantly large tumor. Surgery was the only option, carrying a slim chance of survival and a high cost. There was also cancer growing in her lungs that would require its own intervention down the road, along with a lifetime of hospital visits, medications, and procedures.
With the heaviest heart I’ve ever carried, I made the decision to let her go peacefully, while being held and loved. She was a lover until the very end, brave and beautiful in every way. While I will think of her every single day, the weight of her medical care now rests heavily on my shoulders.
