Help Cover Medical Costs For Thierry Habinshuti

Donation protected
Thierry Habinshuti is a senior in the Civil Engineering program at Iowa State University. On Thursday, April 8th he collapsed unexpectedly, and after his roommate could not find a pulse, he called 911 and began CPR on him. Thierry then had a very faint pulse by the time the ambulance arrived. He was then transported to a hospital in Ames, but was soon after transferred downtown to Mercy One for more extensive care.

Thierry has not breathed on his own yet, and has been sedated and placed on a ventilator since his collapse.

He is now in the Intensive Care Unit at Mercy One hospital, and has an infection in his lungs they are trying to fight with antibiotics. They are unsure at this time what specifically caused the collapse, or if he has sustaining injuries from the CPR that was performed on him.

They have stated that he is going to be in the hospital for at least three more days, if not longer if he does not come out of it soon.

Thierry's country of origin is Rwanda, he attended high school at Des Moines Christian Schools, and now he is here on a student visa to be able to attend ISU. Because of this, we are unsure at this time if he has any medical insurance through ISU that will help cover some of the medical costs he will be facing.

We know that even if he has partial coverage from the school, he will still be facing extensive medical bills coming out of this. He will be facing the transport by ambulance to the hospital in Ames, as well as the nearly 40 mile transport to the hospital in Des Moines, the cost of any interventions and imaging, and the cost of stay per night in the hospital.

Right now I am hoping he has insurance through the school, so I am setting the limit at $20,000 to cover costs, but will update if he does not have insurance coverage to be more.

If you would like to see more of who Thierry is as a person, here is a link that show him being placed in the "Faces of ISU" museum for his work with international students.

Thierry is one of the most supportive people you would ever meet, and does not hesitate to be there for others, and he works very hard to be an excellent student. My hope is that we will be able to show him the same support that he shows others on a daily basis, and allow this to not cripple his future plans he has worked so hard at achieving.

Thank you for your support, and feel free to reach out with any questions you may have.

I will update this post here as we receive updates on his condition.

For some background, my name is Chelsea Smith, and I have known Thierry for almost 6 years. I have grown very close to both him and Carissa, and they have become like family during that period of time. I am in direct contact with Thierry's aunt and uncle who are representing him right now, and have been able to go with them and support them in the waiting room at the hospital.

When all is said and done, I plan on sending any funds raised directly to Thierry. If he has a US account (which I believe he does) I will work with him to get the funds deposited directly into his account. If not, I will work with Marti, Carissa, Thierry, and his aunt and uncle to decide how they would like to get the funds transferred to him to pay for his medical costs.

Again, thank you all for your support,
Chelsea Smith
