Mayo Clinic heart surgery for Thomas Reck

I am posting this to try and raise some money for the trip to the Mayo Clinic and bills for the next couple of months. Medication alone is estimated at about $40,000 for the first year after this surgery.

Any of you who know Tom, know that he is there to help with anything, always fixing someone’s truck, motorcycle, or sxs. Or helping move something heavy, or just whatever you need. He has to get fixed, so he can still be here for us.

This past May we were camping outside Caliente, there was a race in the morning and all was well...

Until Tom’s heart decided it had other plans and tried to explode in his chest.

By the time I got him to the emergency room in Caliente around 1 am his heart rate was 218 beats per minute (normal is 60-100), they tried bringing it down with nitro pills, but it wasn’t affected at all by them. They decided the only way to save him was to stop his heart completely and then shock him back to life. It worked, thank God! But once they had him stabilized, they called in the Flight for Life chopper to bring him back to Vegas for emergency surgery, where they installed an ICD in his chest (his heart zapper3000) that will zap him when his heart gets going to fast again. But he was also diagnosed with Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy, which is a hereditary disease that causes the heart muscle to get too thick, (normal ventricular septum is 6-11 mm his is now 28 mm) and restricts the blood flow to the brain and all the other organs. He has been in the hospital seven times since May with complications, and we finally got an appointment at the Mayo Clinic for a Septal Myectomy, where they have to open his chest and cut away some of his heart muscle, so that the blood can flow properly again. He has been off work for a good portion of the last four months, and will be off until about the middle of December following his surgery on October fourth. The savings are depleting, and I have to be here full time to care for him until he is healed.
