Lylah’s Story
We are fundraising for a little girl named Lylah White who has just been diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer. What began a few months ago as leg pain progressed into difficulty walking, weight loss and other painful symptoms no little girl should have to endure. The pain became excruciating, severely limiting her mobility. After months of confusion, frustration and doctor’s visits, an MRI finally revealed the real cause of Lylah’s pain. A large and destructive tumor was found in the lower portion of her spine and she was rushed to Mott’s Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor. Not long after, her parents Ashley and Grant received the heartbreaking news that the tumor was in fact malignant. There were also spots found in her lungs which means that the cancer has spread. The official diagnosis of Ewing’s Sarcoma was received just last week and because it is so aggressive, Lylah immediately had a port placed in her chest for chemotherapy.
All about Lylah
Prior to her illness Lylah was an extremely active 8 year old little girl…not afraid to play in the dirt with the boys, racing four wheelers with her little brother Odin, and was even a star wrestler! She also has a softer side and is an artist and lover of all animals…especially cats . Despite what she has been going through, Lylah still has her infectious giggle and smiles through the pain. Over the last two weeks Lylah’s leg has become almost completely immobile and she has been unable to walk some days. Although she is a very tough and brave little girl, she has stated that she is sad and that all she wants for her birthday this May is to walk again. Unfortunately Lylah will not be able to finish the third grade with her peers due to the immunological side effects and time constraints of her rigorous chemo routine.
The Next Steps
Ewing’s Sarcoma is a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer affecting mainly children and young adults. Therefore, Lylah’s treatment will require at least 12 weeks of chemo. Unfortunately Lylah also has spots on her lungs which will require radiation. She will then be reevaluated to see if the tumor on her spine has decreased in size enough for it to be removed through surgery and whether or not the chemo is working. Because this will be such a long road requiring frequent hospitalizations and doctors appointments over an hour away, Ashley has been unable to work at her job as a receptionist. Grant, a Marine veteran, still has to work in order to keep their insurance but has also had to cut back his hours in order to take care of their younger son and still spend time with his wife and little girl at the hospital. While they currently have health insurance they have a high deductible and will shortly have reached their maximum coverage.
Our Ask
No family should have to worry about finances at a time like this. Every donation will help to ensure that Lylah’s family can focus their time and energy on her. As the saying goes, do unto others as you would have done unto you. These are the times when humanity’s goodness shines through. We are asking that you please be a part of the journey to help Lylah and her family.
Thank you so much,
The Friends and Family of Grant, Ashley, Lylah and Odin
