Howl-o! My name is Jewel. I am a Havanese dog, with a signature pink-tongued smile and a love of chasing small, yellow squeaky balls. I love forehead scratches and belly rubs and getting out in nature.

Yesterday I experienced a sudden, unexpected medical emergency called pyometra. It is an infection in the uterus of female dogs, caused by hormonal changes in the body that fill the uterus with pus. Pyometra is a serious, life-threatening condition affecting dogs over six years old, that requires immediate medical attention, and if left untreated can lead to death within hours or days.

My human guardians , who I am mutts about, adopted me when I was around two years old and thought I was spayed. The vet thought so too, as I never showed any signs of going into heat my whole life....

Well.. it turns out that I do.. ah, did have a uterus, which made me at risk for this serious infection that can cause blood poisoning, peritonitis. kidney failure, or uterine rupture, resulting in sepsis and shock. A big round of ap-paws to the human I am most fond of, who caught it early and got me in to see the great folks at James Bay Vet right away. I am getting the needed surgery with Dr. Jennie.

Now, for the Ask: My solo parent family have been dealing with the financial effects of covid-related illness themselves the past eighteen months and they need help paying the vet.

My favourite human is a dedicated community-builder, who has raised thousands of dollars for lots of great causes in the past when she was able to work full-time. I hope some of you who are in a position to give, will come forward and contribute towards my vet bill!

Yesterday's emergency visit and procedures totalled $875 and todays's surgery, including removal of some mammary masses that were also found, could cost anywhere from $3500- $4200. We appreciate any amounts of help-- large or small, it all adds up... with the support of many, anything is paws-ible;)

Thanks for the prayers, good vibes, and any financial contributions you can offer to help me get back out to the park where I belong.

Wuff Jewel

update on vet costs:
$5400– pyometra emergency surgery, Apr 2024
$3000– urgent dental surgery, Apr 2025
I am super grateful for pet charities Balfour’s Friend & VOCAL and for all of you dancers & friends who’ve been helping to pay down the $8400 in vet bills little by little each month! Prayers up Jewel will stay healthy —and if she does have any vet needs, that they will be things our pet insurance covers!
