Help Cover Brian Koch's Medical Bills

In the spring of 2020, adored husband, father, and friend Brian Koch began experiencing debilitating back, arm, and leg pain. Primary care physicians and chiropractors thought it could be sciatica, a chronic degenerative spine, or an imbalance of statin drugs. But, on June 1, bloodwork revealed something was not right.
Brian was hastily admitted to Miami Valley Hospital and more tests were ordered. As Brian underwent a CT scan, X-ray, and spinal tap, Brian’s doctors became increasingly puzzled. His initial bloodwork had revealed cancerous cells, but their origin was unknown.
A bone marrow biopsy was ordered, followed by a PET scan, an MRI, another CT scan, EMG, and a prostate biopsy.
Steroids and heavy-duty pain meds were prescribed. More blood was drawn.
On June 10, after many painful procedures and sleepless nights, Brain was diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer that had metastasized to the bone marrow. Brian’s oncologist—an experienced and well-researched physician—said he has NEVER seen a case like Brian’s before, which explains why it was so difficult to diagnose.
The burden of a scary cancer diagnosis is heavy enough on its own. But on top of that, the Kochs are also shouldering the weight of Brian’s medical bills—which they must pay completely out-of-pocket.
Before Brian’s health issues began, the Kochs switched to a new health insurance plan, effective on May 16. Due to a lapse in coverage (and a clause stating a cancer diagnosis within the first 30 days would not be covered), Brian and Donna are bearing the financial brunt of Brian’s hospital stay and expensive tests. And with how complicated Brian’s cancer was to diagnose, the bills are steep.
