Hi I’m Courtney and with the help from my cousin Michelle we are writing this in hopes of helping my mom with this unexpected financial situation. Our family recently found out my mom has Stage 3 Large B cell lymphoma.
My mother was not feeling well, she was having severe abdominal pain and pressure that went on for days prior to her finally going to be seen at the Orlando Health Emergency room on December 3rd, 2024. While at the ER the doctor ordered/performed a few tests on her which included a Urinalysis, a CBC with Auto differential blood test, as well as a comprehensive Metabolic Panel blood test. These tests showed many of her levels were not in the normal ranges. Some of her levels showed abnormal, some levels were low, as well as some levels were High. Her White blood cell count,Red blood cell count, Hemoglobin, as well as her Hematocrit levels (just to name a few BUT not all) all showed HIGH levels. The hospital then ordered/performed a CT with contrast of her Abdomen/Pelvis. The results of the CT showed that she has a large indeterminant Periportal Epigastric soft tissue mass measuring 8.1 X 8.8cm in size!! Which is located behind her stomach in between her liver and pancreas. The CT scan also showed that this mass is compressing the main portal vein and left portal vein of the liver with mass effect on the anterior wall of the stomach and pancreatic head. The CT scan also showed that she has enlarged mesenteric and retroperitoneal lymph nodes present. The ER then discharged her with a referral to be seen by Orlando Health Cancer Institute for further evaluation and consultation to be done by a surgical oncologist.
Her Surgical Oncology evaluation/consult appointment with Orlando Health Cancer Institute was on December 18th, 2024. At this appointment her surgical oncologist said that she presents with bulky periportal and retroperitoneal adenopathy with high concerns for lymphoproliferative disorder. The surgical oncologist also informed her that she isn't a candidate for surgical treatment due to the size and location of the mass. She will require Chemotherapy if lymphoma is confirmed. The surgical oncologist then recommended that she have a EUS-guided biopsy to establish a diagnosis. The biopsy was scheduled and performed on January 7th, 2025. After the biopsy was performed and she was awake from the procedure, she then asked the doctor that performed the procedure if he thought it was cancer, to which he then told her it was NOT CANCER! She was then discharged and went home to wait for the biopsy results to come back. The biopsy was then sent out to the lab for evaluation. Everything that she was told that day all of a sudden changed on January 13th, 2025. The pathology reports from the biopsy came back and her surgical oncologist called her to inform her that it was in fact cancer/lymphoma! Her official cancer diagnosis is called: Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma, Germinal Center B-cell type. She was then referred to the Florida cancer specialist to see a medical oncologist for another consultation now that she had an official cancer diagnosis.
She had her consult appointment with the Florida cancer specialist on January 16th, 2025. The medical oncologist there informed her at this time based on the size of the mass and the fact that she has four lymph nodes affected/enlarged due to the lymphoma diagnosis. She is in stage 3 of this cancer diagnosis. The doctor has ordered a bone marrow biopsy as well as a core biopsy of the mass to see if the cancer has spread to her bone marrow at this time or not (which is pending scheduling a time and date for that procedure to be performed). If the bone marrow biopsy results show that the cancer is also in the bone marrow the stage will be increased to a stage 4 diagnosis. The doctor has also ordered her to have a PET scan done which is scheduled for February 6th,2025. The treatment plan for Chemotherapy as well as any other medications/treatments will depend and change based on the results of the additional testings. Her medical oncologist informed her that this form of cancer usually responds well to treatment depending on how progressed it is. Which will be determined on the pending tests. Unfortunately even though she has insurance it doesn’t cover co payments, all of the treatment costs or gas to and from appointments. This is just the beginning and it’s already emotionally and financially draining them.
