Hello! My name is Courtney. I am a 37-year-old mother of two. I started this journey at the age of 15 after two years of being misdiagnosed at the age of 15 I received devastating news. I had osteogenic sarcoma a rare bone cancer that shouldn’t have affected my age group and my gender. At the time I was told it was not prominent in my age group however, I had it, and it was deep down in the bone in the tibia region. At this point a decision was made. The oncologist made a plan to do six months of chemo and in that six months then do a total knee replacement to remove the cancer and rebuild the knee. The plan was to be healed and go back to playing my favorite sport basketball and I would go back to being a fun loving, carefree teenager. One that beat cancer and flourished in life. Unfortunately, the doctor that performed the knee replacement botched it. There was a knee replacement done with no mesh. None of the proper things to make it functioning. Skin on metal, a whole nightmare. I spent years trying to reconstruct a surgery with nobody being held accountable for how they were managing my health and leg. I became a guinea pig essentially for the healthcare system another surgery, another attempt, and by the end of it, I was looking at a hip and knee replacement. I was so desperate and in pain and trying to be a mother to small children and said sure there has to be a way that this can be fixed. Unfortunately, it was not, later I developed sepsis which after years of trying to save the leg, I end up losing the leg, taking the leg was to save my life. I still struggle mentally although knowing it was the right decision. I went a few years walking on crutches because I was never at a spot in life that I thought I could take on the prosthetic leg process. I have barely any limb left. I am a hip disarticulate patient. This makes it extremely hard to be able to walk. I went through a lot of things over those years due to health and life circumstances and recently over these past two years I was able to get a prosthetic leg. For the first time I could see Hope I started a YouTube channel to document my progress. Something I never thought in 1 million years I would do. This sight of myself in a mirror made me sick at points, but for some reason, I was able to share online over these past few months. I have documented walking with the leg that I started with and going through many socket adjustments and change changes to try to fit me better. I recently was giving an opportunity to get a new knee and new ankle and foot joint because that seemed to be hindering me. I went for the appointment. Everything was great. I did phenomenal and I really loved the knee and foot however, like most insurances, it is difficult to get things approved. I found out yesterday that my insurance company will cover the foot and ankle but not the knee. The knee is the most important part because it gives me stability and opportunity to walk far better than I could’ve imagined. When I asked the doctor how much for this microprocessor knee, he said it would run about $30,000. I was shocked but kind of expected it. I am on here today asking for anyone’s help. This is something I normally would never do, however seeing a glimpse of how I could walk when I tried this new knee foot and ankle for a demo, has given me drive to try to at least raise this money and see how I can get this knee. If you would like to support me in this journey of being able to walk, I would greatly appreciate it. I’m going to ask for 35,000. The extra is just in case something comes up in the process and also I have had to be out of work on and off because of my medical condition and now trying to get a leg to be able to walk has hindered me from working. There are jobs that I have missed out on simply because of my handicap and being judged and told that this job probably wouldn’t be for me, without them ever coming out and saying it’s because of my handicap. I want to be able to walk down the aisle when I get married, not crutch down the aisle. I want to be able to walk in for an interview and feel confident. Again, if you’re able to give anything, I truly appreciate it thank you and if you’re interested in my journey, you can follow me on my YouTube channel. If you cannot donate monetarily, if you could watch a video on my channel (countingxsteps) that would also help tremendously. Thank you in advance!
