My daughter Courtney Caldwell was born on June 19th, 1993, and from the very beginning, she was my social butterfly. She grew up with big dreams—she wanted to be a sheriff, a ballerina, and eventually, she received the best job ever: becoming a mom herself. But recently, Courtney’s life has changed in ways we never could have imagined. During her pregnancy, Courtney was diagnosed with stationary diabetes. Doctors told us that, most likely, her body would return to normal after her baby was born. Sadly, that didn’t happen. Instead, Courtney’s condition worsened. She is now blind, has lost her mobility, and can no longer use the bathroom on her own. This illness has not only changed Courtney’s life, but mine as well.

Right now, Courtney is in Houston while I am in Chicago, and it breaks my heart to be so far away when she needs me most. After spending so long in the hospital, Courtney lost everything—her home, her independence, and her sense of security. If she were discharged today, she would have nowhere to go and no resources to help her adjust to this new reality. My Princess needs housing, medicine, and equipment to help her live with dignity. I need to get to her, and I want to raise awareness about this dangerous and deadly illness so that others can understand what diabetes can do and how we can fight and manage it together.
