On Saturday, July 23rd, our dear Courtney endured a traumatic injury that would completely change her life. In a freak accident, she fell head first and broke her back while visiting friends in California. After getting x-rays and consulting a neurosurgeon, she was immediately transported via ambulance to the nearest Trauma ER. After a long and painful night at La Jolla Scripps and multiple CT scans, the ER surgeon revealed that Courtney had a total of 5 fractures, one of which was a completely unstable burst fracture in her spine. “Stupendous” is the way they described how Courtney had managed 2 days with a broken back and the fact that she wasn’t paralyzed. She had emergency spinal surgery under the care of 2 incredible neurosurgeons, Dr. Udani and Dr. Smith, who performed a posterior fusion surgery and implanted 10 screws and 2 rods into her spine for support.

After more days of healing and getting her pain to a somewhat bearable level, she was discharged on Sunday, July 31st and is currently healing at her parents home in Encinitas, California until she has doctor approval to head back to New York and start Physical Therapy.
