Please consider helping Cor'ye, who in the course of just a few moments was scammed on the phone out of the $2,400 in savings he's worked for years to accumulate. Cor'ye is poised on the cusp of his adult life - preparing to move into an apartment with my son and another longtime friend - and this set-back is devastating to him both practically and emotionally: it was intended as his share of the deposit and first-month's rent.
Having raised himself for much of his life, Cor’ye worked for last past two years to build a $2,400 nest egg that would allow him to move out of a difficult family situation and into his first-ever apartment, which he has planned to share with my son and another roommate, beginning next month. But on Saturday, a phone scammer stole it all in just a few minutes. (It was the “I’m calling from the IRS and we need to collect the money you owe or the police will come to arrest you” scam.) Cor’ye was left with just a few dollars to his name, and then in a flash he realized what had happened.
Cor’ye doesn’t ask for help and he doesn’t easily accept it, either. But when I heard about this from my son, I reached out to Cor’ye, reassured him, told him that I would help, and said that I would reach out to others who might be able and wiling to spare a little to help him recover and continue to move ahead.
I’ve known Cor’ye for years, since the days when he and my son were freshmen in high school together, and he’s remained a part of what I think of as our kinship circle.I'm helping Cor'ye in the ways I can, but I'm turning to the larger community of kind people who might be willing to help him find his footing and rebuild his faith and hope.
So although I’ve never done this before (and never expected to), I’ve started this GoFundMe campaign to share this news and invite anybody who feels inclined to contribute.
