Cory and Kat never imagined the journey they would face when they welcomed their son, Ryker, into the world. Born at just 29 weeks and weighing less than one pound, Ryker arrived far too early and far too small. From the very beginning, his survival was uncertain. Every day since his birth has been spent in the NICU, filled with fear, hope, and endless prayers as Cory and Kat watched their tiny baby fight with incredible strength.

Ryker has remained in the NICU since the day he was born and has faced overwhelming medical challenges. He was born with fragile bones that led to leg fractures, club feet, and may be blind in one eye. For months, he experienced multiple bradycardia episodes every night, only beginning to improve about three weeks ago. He required oxygen around the clock until just two weeks ago. Ryker also struggles with secretions that must be suctioned to prevent choking, and he recently underwent surgery to place a G-tube so he can receive proper nutrition and continue to grow. Despite everything his little body has endured, Ryker continues to fight every single day.

After months of uncertainty, Cory and Kat have been given the incredible news that Ryker will finally be coming home — on Christmas Eve. This truly feels like a Christmas miracle. Over the past week, they have been living in the hospital, learning how to care for Ryker’s complex medical needs so they can safely bring him home.

Once home, Ryker will require extensive ongoing care. He will be on oxygen 24/7, connected to a heart monitor, and receive nutrition through his feeding tube. He will need numerous medical supplies and may require round-the-clock care. Because of Ryker’s needs, Cory and Kat have not been able to work and will not be able to return to work for the foreseeable future as they focus entirely on keeping their son safe and healthy.

The financial burden has been immense. Medical bills continue to accumulate, along with travel costs for specialist appointments, household expenses, and the everyday necessities that every baby needs — diapers, clothes, and supplies to support Ryker’s transition home. The weight of these expenses, combined with time away from work, has been overwhelming for this young family.
