Help Cory and Alphonso Overcome Medical Hardships

My name is Alphonso Foster and I’ve known Cory Durham (Big C) for over 30+ years. Cory is not just a friend he’s my brother in Christ as well as a fellow Unionite. We are both two former Virginia Union University football players.
When I first learned about Cory’s need for a kidney in August 2020, my heart ached for him and his family. I thought back to the years of our friendship/brotherhood we’ve shared, the moments we’ve been there for each other through life’s ups and downs. I felt this pull, a deep desire to help in whatever way I could. I knew this wasn’t just about the act of giving a kidney; it was about love, connection and the value I place on our friendship. Cory has always been more than just a friend; he’s been like a brother.
Deciding to get tested with my wife’s support, was in many ways an act of faith. I wasn’t sure if I would be a match, but I hoped with all my heart that I could give Cory the chance at a healthier, fuller life. When the results came back and I learned that I was a match, I felt a rush of emotions – joy, relief, and a sense of purpose. It was clear to me that this was the path I was meant to take.
The journey wasn’t easy. Testing, preparing for surgery and recovering took a toll on me physically, emotionally and financially. There were moments when the financial strain was overwhelming, but no matter how hard it got, I never questioned was the right thing to do. I believed in this gift, in Cory and in the future that lay ahead for both of us. Even in the toughest times, I was reminded that faith, love and compassion transcend any hardship. We both are still being affected financially by this act of kindness.
Cory’s strength, our family’s unwavering support and the hope we all held onto carried me through. Knowing that my small part could offer Cory the chance to live without dialysis made every sacrifice worthwhile. Seeing him come out of surgery, knowing that a piece of me was helping him thrive, was indescribable. It filled my heart with a kind of joy and peace I will carry with me forever.
This experience has depended on my faith, my love for him and his family in ways I didn’t know were possible. The bond we share now feels unbreakable, forged not just through years of friendship, but through this intimate and profound connection.
Cory and his family have always been and will always be a cherished part of my life. I didn’t just give a kidney; I gave a part of myself because I believe in Cory and because his life matters to me more than I can express. Anything that you can contribute to assist us with recovering from the financial hardship in which we encumbered via our medical bills would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance and God Bless.
Union, we’ll e’er revere the cause for which you stand.
