A Voice for Corrie

Donation protected
My name is Heather. My husband Corrie and I have been together for 18 years. He is my great love story and now I need help be his hero.

On July 24th, after 19 years of having a Montgomery T-tube tracheostomy, my husband Corrie had a tracheal resection done. This major surgery was supposed to improve his quality of life by allowing him to do things that most people take for granted, like swimming and playing contact sports and playing/wrestling with our kids. It was supposed to allow him to live trach free.

Instead, less than 48 hours after surgery, Corrie went in to complete respiratory failure which required that he be on a vent for 3 days and subsequently required that an emergency tracheostomy be placed. When he woke up from the vent, he was unable to move air through his nose and mouth and was unable to speak. After 2 weeks in the hospital, he was discharged in horrible pain, with a standard tracheostomy that he now has to breathe through and without a voice.

While Corrie's pain improves everyday, he is still unable to speak. A surgery on September 25th to remove scar tissue and regain his voice was unsuccessful and at his follow-up appointment in October, we learned from his surgeon that Corrie's vocal cords are still swollen (when they should not be) and that there is nothing more that he can do for Corrie. He is referring us elsewhere and washing his hands of us.

This news has taken an emotional toll on both Corrie and I, but we are refusing to give up this fight. We are convinced that we can find someone who can help Corrie get his voice back and possibly allow him to someday live trach free, or at least get him back to the quality of life we enjoyed prior to this surgery.

Getting Corrie's voice back will involve seeing the best and seeing the best will require us to travel to places like Boston, Cleveland, and Salt Lake City from our home in Oregon. Seeing the best means lost time at work for me and more time spent on airplanes and in various hotel rooms across the country for our family. But seeing the best means that my boys and I have a chance to hear Corrie tell us that he loves us again.

While I have been very hesitant to ask for help as so many have already  helped and supported us over the last three months, I can't do this alone. Corrie desperately wants to talk and live a normal life again, and I desperately want to hear him. I'm asking for help to do that.

All money raised will go towards the cost of travel, with any extra going towards ongoing medical expenses.

Thanks for reading and considering, but please do not feel obligated to donate if you don't want to or are unable to. Love and prayers as we continue on this path are just as appreciated.
