At a recent yearly checkup, my cat, Copernicus, was diagnosed with two troubling health problems: a heart murmur and dental disease severe enough to require surgery. He had a high risk of infection and tooth loss if left untreated. Because of the heart issue, however, before getting surgery, Copernicus needed an echocardiogram to determine whether his heart could withstand the stress of surgery.

Fortunately, his heart murmur was mild enough for surgery to be possible, but because of his special needs, Copernicus' regular vet couldn't perform the surgery, and he was referred to a veterinary dentist for assessment and treatment.

Although his heart condition raised the risks, Copernicus' procedure fortunately went smoothly! His teeth and gums were cleaned and examined, and one of his back molars was removed, due to late stage periodontal disease. As Copernicus is a rescue cat and lived as stray for an unknown length of time, it's impossible to say what hardships he endured in his past, which may have included damage to his teeth. Fortunately, following his successful procedure, his tooth problems and discomfort have become a thing of the past.

Now, Copernicus needs your help! The cost of vet bills for multiple procedures and tests was high, and this financial burden has taken a toll on his owner, depleting funds that are necessary for Copernicus' food, housing, happiness, and future health—as he will continue to need monitoring and treatment for his heart murmur as he ages.
