Colton's birth in September of 2017 was such a blessing, but far from an easy day. After more than 24 hours of labor, Colton was stuck and not getting oxygen. Doctors needed to pull him out quickly - when they did, he suffered an injury to his Brachial Plexus nerves on his right side. Initially, we were told that he'd get better quickly and heal on his own.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Colt really didn't move his right arm for most of the first 2-3 months of his life and he seemed to be in pain. We were told that he suffers from Erb’s Palsy, and has permanent damage to those nerves.
His first surgery happened when he was 6 months old. Since then, we've had two more procedures. Colton has Occupational Therapy to go along with these surgeries and all of it has been extremely helpful in him regaining strength and working towards a normal life. We have been told he will likely always deal with stiffness, weakness and a loss of range of motion.
Thankfully, each procedure has gone a long way in Colt's recovery. He now has the ability to move his shoulder up and down, rotate it, and can pick things up with his right hand. He can climb and crawl and do almost everything most children can do! We're extremely proud of our little man.
We have been told his OT will need to carry on indefinitely and another surgery is likely. We have supported Colt’s medical bills entirely on our own and I have been extremely torn about even posting this. However, any help will go a long way and will be so appreciated by our family. The surgeries, MRI’s, casts and injections have created a heavy financial burden. By helping us cover his medical costs we can continue to give him the freedom and ability he wants to do in life by having as much strength and ability in his right arm as possible! Colt can smash Erb’s Palsy!
