Did you know that 61% of women would rather talk about death than money? Did you know despite the fact that women now earn the majority of college degrees, the wealth and wage gap persists and is growing? Did you know women lose out on half a million to a million dollars over the course of their lifetime simply by not investing?
This past year, the more I spoke with women around me, the more I realized how little many of us knew about money. Sadly this makes sense, as women have literally been barred from being apart of financial systems throughout history. This past year, I've gone on a journey that's led me to see how connected a woman's financial literacy is to every constraint in her day to day life.
After many powerful one on one conversations and reading books like "The Soul of Money, " I realized that there is so much healing that can happen inside of conversations about money for women who have systemically felt like those conversations are not for them. I started writing about the psychological barriers that make it difficult for women to understand money.
Take for instance, one of my clients, whose heart is so big that she was donating more money than she was making each month. Or another who was paying interest every month on an underfunded savings account for her son. Women shouldn't get taxed for having big hearts. We tell women to be nice and that often leads to them giving their money away or thinking it's inappropriate to understand or want to grow it.
Inspired by my incredible family, people like my Grandpa Harry, my Aunt Lori, my Zeyda Bernie, and my Mom Suri (all of whom work(ed) in financial services in one way or another), I find that I'm really passionate about continuing to educate myself on these topics and also to support women in particular who may not be sure how or where to begin when it comes to being financially literate.
When I'm not at my school or working with clients independently, I work for a former Managing Director at BlackRock and also with a leading platform in financial literacy for women.
Those of you who know me probably think that the last thing I'd want to do is work in financial services and, no, I'm definitely not looking to work on wall street. But when I do these sessions with women, I learn more about how deeply personal and intimate of a story our money can tell. I want to help women grow and heal inside of their potentially confusing relationships to money. The data shows that this relationship is confusing for the majority of us and while it's not our fault, there is so much we can do about it.
Before working with clients, I always have to give the disclaimer that "I'm not a financial professional and have no formal training in this space". This year, I'd really like to get some formal training in this space! As a birthday gift, I'd be so grateful if you would contribute to my GoFundMe, where I'm fundraising to pay for for an evening online course that will certify me as a Financial Paraplanner Qualified Professional. I'm not only personally interested in furthering my financial education but also excited to be able to take the disclaimer off of my blog posts and feel more qualified to support women in a more professional capacity.
And while I'm "in training," I'm still actively getting paid to do this work with women - specifically, helping them staredown their spending (if you're new to this, here's a post I wrote about what a staredown is), understand how and where their cash flows, and put gentle financial plans + goals in place from there.
✨If you give $30 or more to my campaign, you'll be entitled to a free spending staredown and I'll reach out to you to see if you'd like to set one up
✨If you give $60 or more to my campaign, same as above plus I'll offer a staredown to someone who can't afford one
Feel free to shoot me a message or just start by subscribing to my newsletter , I'd love to have you.
Sending love to you all and so very grateful for you taking the time to read!
