Help Colbert County Animal Shelter Save Lives

Seven years ago, I rescued a dog who became my whole world. I called her Roxy Girl. Just recently, she crossed the Rainbow Bridge, and my heart is still broken in ways I don’t have words for. I wasn’t ready to bring another dog home — it felt too soon, too much like trying to replace someone irreplaceable. So instead, I started volunteering at the Colbert County Animal Shelter, hoping to fill the enormous gap her absence left in my days. What I found there changed everything I thought I knew about what these animals need — and what this shelter is up against.

Located at 5010 Missouri Street in Tuscumbia, Alabama, the Colbert County Animal Shelter is a small but mighty nonprofit dedicated to providing a safe haven for neglected, abandoned, and abused animals and to promoting compassionate and humane treatment for every creature in their care. They take in dogs, cats, and even horses — giving voice to those who have none. The shelter was originally built to house around 20–40 dogs and 16–19 cats. Despite that, they routinely care for far more animals than that capacity was ever designed to hold, working tirelessly to find every single one a forever home. The shelter receives support from community donations, the Colbert County Commission, and local cities. It sounds like a lot — until you realize it doesn’t fully cover their operational costs. County funding covers payroll and insurance, and little else. Everything beyond that depends on the generosity of this community.

Recently, the shelter took in nearly forty dogs from a hoarding situation. Forty animals — frightened, neglected, and in need of immediate medical attention, food, and care. It was the right thing to do. It was the only humane thing to do. But it has severely depleted the shelter’s existing funds, already stretched thin. These animals didn’t ask to be in this situation. The shelter didn’t hesitate to say yes. Now they need us to say yes, too. Please help support the Colbert County Animal Shelter so they can continue to save and care for animals in need.
