At 12, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disorder. It has been a brittle journey for the majority of my life. Now at the age of 38, I'm dealing with terminal issues. This journey has included insulin-dependent diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, eye disease, end-stage renal failure, and now cancer. I have spent the last year dehabilitatingly sick and virtually homebound, fighting to find some normalcy amongst these great sicknesses. My goal is a transplant, and I am working diligently towards this.

Recently, I have battled blood pressure instability, extreme fluctuating sugar levels, hypercalcemia, and thyroid cancer. There are many days I cannot even stand on my feet without passing out. Cancer has been my tipping point, making it impossible to take care of my family the way I’d like to. This would crush any man, as it does me.

I currently spend 9 plus hours a day on dialysis and the remainder recovering my system. Then, being shuffled to medical appointments hours away, driving great distances from our rural community to major medical care. I have weekly blood tests, scans, and sometimes surgeries. The headache of dealing with insurance companies on the phone, and then getting all the medical bills in the mailbox, WONDERING…How Will I Even Do This???
