WHY CODY NEEDS A WHEELCHAIR?

Cody became a full time wheelchair user in 2022. From then till as of recently, he has relied on a folding electric wheelchair to travel any distance. In October 2025, his wheelchair broke. Due to this, he can no longer access the bathroom, clean his room, or facilitate the daily necessities required from life.

Cody and his family cannot afford to buy a new folding electric wheelchair, and they can’t afford the price to fix his old one either. He doesn’t qualify for government assistance and feels he has no other choice than to reach out to our community for support.

WHY SPECIFICALLY A FOLDING ELECTRIC WHEELCHAIR?

Cody’s disability causes profound fatigue and debilitating pain. Due to his diagnoses, he cannot climb the stairs more than once, maybe twice a week. When he had a functional folding power wheelchair, it saved him energy, enabling him to do more throughout the day with less pain. He previously had the ability to go outside more often, which greatly improves his overall well being.

Cody lives in an inaccessible house that a stairlift company said cannot be made accessible. He lives on the second story of his parents' home. Cody currently crawls down the stairs every time he needs to leave the house. Previously, someone would carry his 70 lbs. folding power wheelchair down the stairs and back up again. Due to his family needing to transport the wheelchair up and down the stairs, he requires a folding power wheelchair that doesn't weigh more than 150lbs. This way, his family will be able to assist him in leaving their home.

Additionally, the upstairs of their home isn't accessible either. 3 steps enter the bedroom, so his family member installed a 5 foot long ramp. In a folding power wheelchair Cody was able to go up and down this ramp, in order to access the bathroom at the bottom of the steps of the second story. Now in order for him to access the bathroom, someone must help him, or he risks worsening his health.

HOW DONATIONS WILL BE USED?

All funds will go towards providing Cody the needed mobility aids for independent living.

We hope to raise enough money for a Folding Power Wheelchair. All initial funds will go towards buying Cody a Folding Power Wheelchair. If we exceed the amount needed for his wheelchair, the leftover amount will go towards purchasing an Evac+Chair, a transportation device that will safely aid his family in carrying him up the stairs.

WHY THIS SITUATION IS URGENT!
His health wouldn’t be at risk every day.

HYGIENE - Cody’s wheelchair has been broken for multiple months now. For the past few months he has been unable to perform the daily tasks required to live, and the ones he can complete, he now does so with great struggle. His mom bought a portable toilet for him to use at his bedside, next to the same place where he eats. Before that, Cody was peeing in a bucket.

PAIN - Cody has a manual wheelchair that was given to him second hand. This wheelchair was designed to fit a person with a smaller body than him. This causes Cody to feel compressed in his manual wheelchair. It painfully squeezes his body and he is unable to propel himself more than a few feet due to fatigue, low blood volume, and neuropathy in his fingers.

DIET - Cody has lost weight since his folding power wheelchair broke. It is difficult for him to push his manual wheelchair to the mini fridge, which is across the room. It doesn’t fit elsewhere. His disabilities require him to be on a specialized diet. He is supposed to eat 6 small meals a day. It isn’t possible for him to push himself that many times to the fridge in a single day.

Not having the wheelchair Cody needs has not only decreased his quality of life and independence, it's also added stress to the people he loves and relies on. If Cody had the mobility aids he needs, he would be able to access the bathroom, have some semblance of a kitchen, clean his bedroom, and leave the house more regularly.

WHY NOT APPLY FOR GOVERNMENT SUPPORT?
Cody doesn’t meet the eligibility criteria for government support.

The eligibility criteria is different for every program, but the main one being: “The client must have wheelchair accessible housing...”

This greatly restricts access to those who need it. If a person can't afford a wheelchair, how would they afford to make their house accessible? It doesn’t make sense.

Cody has contacted over 20 different organizations with no results.
