Hi, my name’s Coda, I'm a trans woman in London, and I'm raising funds for gender-affirming healthcare.

I’m reaching a breaking point in my transition, where the gender dysphoria I experience daily is so crippling that I find it hard to be present in my life and go beyond just existing. I’ve been putting off making this fundraiser for a long time - I’m scared of being seen as a burden, so I’ve always tried to be self-sufficient to a fault, but I feel this is unsustainable, and I’m damaging my mental health.

After a long wait, I started hormone replacement therapy in early 2021. It helped a lot by giving me a sense of clarity, which I’m very grateful for. Unfortunately, hormones can only do so much, especially when someone has gone through puberty already (as I have), and I know I need to take my medical transition further.

Gender-affirming healthcare on the NHS is extremely limited. As an immigrant from a working-class background, I don’t have the necessary financial backing to support my transition. Although I’m a songwriter and musician by education, once I realised the crippling cost of my transition, I put my creative career on hold and focused my energy into a steady full-time job so that I could save. Today, I live as frugally as possible and set aside everything I can for my medical transition, but the related costs are just impossible to shoulder on my own.

It's challenging to navigate the trauma of dysphoria, and I'm exhausted from feeling so uncomfortable every time I see my reflection - I’m tired of feeling powerless. I wish to undergo facial feminisation surgery to help align my face with my inner sense of self. When you strip back everything else, I want to feel at peace, like I’m not at war with my own body. I’m hoping this fundraiser can help me live and be me x
