This is our Coco. She plays many roles: auntie, sister, daughter, friend, bestie, patient, and the most important role of them all…mom. We've created this page because she is far too proud (and quite stubborn if we're being honest) to ask for help so she does not become homeless and living in her car. So, because we love her, we're asking for her.
In 2003, Coco was in a car accident that has left her disabled. Just nine weeks ago, Coco had her 23rd surgery. She told us it would be life-changing after waiting over two years for it. She was not kidding. After being stuck in bed for four years due to severe chronic pain, we now see her walking, moving, and standing more than ever before. We watched her get her mobility and autonomy back. She's just trying to have a better quality of life. On May 20th, Coco will have her 24th surgery.
We don't quite know how she does it, but we know why…her son. She's a proud mom of a 17-year-old son who graduates this year. She was hoping to (for the first time since her son was 4) make lasting memories with him this summer. He is her whole world.
On May 1st, Coco will be homeless with her two support animals. A shelter cannot accommodate her disabilities, so she will be living in her car with her animals. She does get disability, but because of the rising rental prices, she must wait for income-based housing. This can take 3-12 months. She will not put her son in this situation, which means that she will forfeit her parenting time with him.
We're not really sure how she has enough energy, but Coco goes to medical appointments weekly and attends 4-12 of them a week. Her car needs vital repairs in the very near future, and without making them, her car won't even run. She told us in the last 30 days she spent almost $500 on fuel to attend those appointments and pick up her son.
We realize we're asking a lot, but Coco will never ask herself. She has done a ton of research to try to keep herself out of this situation and gotten all the resources she can. She hopes in the fall to substitute teach and get her post-bachelor's paralegal certificate. Coco is always adding to her education and is an encyclopedia of useful facts and random facts no one even thinks about. We want to see her thrive and figure out what kind of things she likes to do. She's quirky, silly, loves to laugh until her stomach hurts, and has the biggest heart. She wears it on her sleeve and will give her last dollar to someone in need even if she needed it.
Anything you can give, we know she'll be eternally grateful and pay it forward in some way. We will also be grateful that you made it so our Coco isn't sleeping in her car. Help Coco have the summer with her son that she has fought so hard to have.
