Words / fundraise by friend, Nora:
I am writing this seeking financial assistance for one of my dearest chosen family members who has been affected by the tragic NNSW flooding of 2022.
I was with T in Tasmania where they were visiting an old friend during the birth of their first child when the waters started rising, and we were in contact with their partner from their home in Lismore as the severity of the situation set in, first discussing the flood plan that every Lismorian has had the harrowing reality of actualising, then organising movement of their belongings to higher ground, before their partner finally evacuated their sanctuary and bid goodbye to life as they knew it. I witnessed the reality set in for T, realising all they owned and had made for themself was left in a past they could never return to, worried for the safety of their partner & community and trying desperately to book flights to return home. After many cancelled flights and much emotional turmoil, T has now managed to return to the area, generously bringing water, supplies and their infectious smile to begin cleaning and repairing on the ground.
T is a vibrant member of many communities across Australia, and has been residing in the Northern Rivers since 2018. During this time they have set down roots and immersed themself in the enrichment of community life - from various volunteer roles feeding folks at the Winsome and answering calls for Lifeline, their great efforts towards environmental activism through to contributing to the cultural environment through their musical talent and artistic ability - you very well may have been lucky enough to meet them busking and offering their art on a street you frequent - they have a bright smile that is impossible to miss and hard to forget.
They have been affected by generational financial disadvantage, experiencing homelessness and hunger throughout their young adulthood and have made admirable steps toward securing financial security, finding fulfilling employment and stable accommodation, and using their means to help all living things. It is devastating to witness the setback of great material loss on an individual who has come so far.
The money raised will go toward securing housing for T and their partner, replacing their lost belongings and toward basic living essentials in the foreseeable future. Any leftover funds will be shared directly with the local community in need.
