Hello, my name is Julio Cruz, though most people know me simply as Coach Julio. I proudly served 11 years in the armed forces before becoming a disabled veteran, and for the last 35 years, I’ve dedicated my life to coaching volleyball at the high school, club, and beach levels.
Coaching is my passion and my purpose, but for a long time, I have been coaching from behind a "curtain."
Due to traumatic dental experiences in my youth, I developed a deep-seated anxiety that kept me away from the dentist for years. Today, my dental health has reached a critical point. With missing teeth and several more needing extraction, eating has become painful, and my self-esteem has taken a heavy hit.
It isn’t just about the physical pain. I’ve started having nightmares about my teeth falling out, and the comments I’ve received, even unintentional ones from players, colleagues and some friends, cut deeply. Most recent, at the Gasparilla tournament from one of my players. I find myself hiding my smile, embarrassed by the very thing that should reflect my joy for the game and my players.
My wife, Brenda, and I have explored every financial avenue, but the cost of a full mouth restoration is over $45,000. As a veteran on a fixed income(coaching volleyball is my 'full time' job), this is simply out of our reach. We have been saving some money on our own. My dream is simple: to have a healthy, confident smile that I no longer have to hide. I want to stand on the sidelines and cheer for my players without a second thought.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the cost so high ($45,000+)? Full mouth restoration is a complex series of surgical procedures. It involves multiple extractions, bone grafting (to ensure the jaw is strong enough), and the placement of permanent implants or high-quality prosthetics. I have received two professional quotes, and this amount covers the specialist surgeons, anesthesia, laboratory fees for the teeth, and follow-up care. I'm open to getting another quote and consultation if recommended. We have saved some money towards this.
Does insurance or the VA cover this? Unfortunately, most dental insurance plans have a very low annual cap (usually $1,500–$2,000), which hardly scratches the surface of a full reconstruction. While I am a disabled veteran, VA dental benefits are extremely restrictive and typically only cover those who are 100% disabled or have a service-connected dental injury. We have exhausted all traditional avenues for coverage.
When do you hope to have the procedure? My dental health is declining so I hope to schedule the first stage of the surgery as soon as I can. I believe the specialists require a significant deposit to begin the surgical phase.
What happens if you raise more than the goal? Any additional funds will be used strictly for the "hidden" costs of recovery, such as soft-food diets, medications, and any unforeseen adjustments needed during the healing process (which can take several weeks or months). Once my goal is met, with the inclusion of our saved amounts, I will stop this page.
How else can I help besides donating? The power of community is incredible. Simply sharing this link on your Facebook, Instagram, or via email to former teammates, work network, and friends makes a massive difference. Spreading the word is just as valuable as a donation.
We are humbly asking for your support to help cover the costs of this life-changing surgery. Whether you can donate or simply share this page with your network, Brenda and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Every little bit helps.
With heartfelt gratitude, “Coach” Julio Cruz
