I’m writing this with a heavy heart and tears that haven’t stopped since the storm. After four painful days of no contact, I finally heard my parents’ voices. Thank God they’re alive. But the reality that followed is devastating. They lost absolutely everything.
Our family of four, just my sister, my parents, and me, has been torn apart by Hurricane Melissa’s destruction. My parents are retired agriculturists who have spent their entire lives working the land with integrity, honesty, and faith.
They have gone through so much in the process over the many years, from numerous theft to several near-death experiences in the field, but this time, they were completely destroyed by the hurricane.
Their small farm was not just their livelihood; it was their home, their source of food, income, the help to extended family and even friends that became family, and the foundation that supported my sister and me right throughout early childhood, secondary, and tertiary education. Now, all of it is gone.
Their home is flooded, their crops destroyed, their animals lost, and their tools swept away. What took decades of hard work to build was taken in a single night.
In the midst of this pain, I thank God for their survival because many of our neighbors and fellow Jamaicans weren’t as fortunate. Still, my heart breaks knowing my parents are standing in the wreckage of a life they built with their bare hands.
I am trying to help raise funds in efforts of getting to them when best able to, and help them rebuild from nothing. Your donations will go directly toward:
• Rebuilding and replacing basic necessities
• Providing food, clothing, and safe shelter
• Helping them restart their small farm and livelihood
• Supporting my sister’s continued education during this difficult time.
