Help Claudia to overcome lymphoma cancer

Hello everyone,

My name is Claudia Viloria and I am 32 years old. Some of you might know me, I'm one of the co-founders of Gals en Australia, an online community supporting Latinx women living across Australia to find professional employment.

In February 2019, I came to Australia by myself as an international student from Colombia. Currently, I live in Melbourne, and over the past couple of years, I have met incredible people who I have now adopted as my family: my friends.

I have recently been diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma cancer manifested as an 11-centimeter tumor located in my thorax. The type of cancer I have is aggressive and rarely occurs in people my age. The only option I have at this point is to undergo a complex 2-year chemotherapy treatment.

The story…

After the middle of August, I started feeling very sick, presenting symptoms such as dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), difficulty breathing when lying down, headaches, chest and neck pain, and a lump in my throat. My GP initially diagnosed me with thyroid issues and gastroesophageal reflux. However, before I could attend my next medical appointment with a gastroenterologist, I was unable to breathe at all after having dinner with a friend on October 9th, so my friend called an ambulance, which took me to the emergency room at St Vincent's Public Hospital – where I have since been admitted.

I was taken through several exams that landed in the diagnosis of T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma. Due to the aggressive nature of my cancer, I started intensive chemotherapy treatments during my second week of hospitalisation. However, since I am not an Australian citizen, my private health insurance will only cover a very minimal amount of the medical costs associated with my treatment. Further, due to my condition being life-threatening, going back to Colombia for treatment is not an option.

My only treatment option due to the rare and advanced nature of my diagnosis is the following chemotherapy protocols that may last 2 years. As of now, I am in the hospital until protocol I is completed, and then I will receive chemotherapy every week for at least 4 days.

Whenever I am out of the hospital, I will still need to cover medical and treatment costs, transportation, food, rent, bills, and other ongoing living expenses. I, therefore, ask all of you to help me with these costs, especially the chemotherapy treatment that hopefully will shrink my tumor. As I fight cancer, any help you can provide me, no matter how big or small, will be greatly appreciated.

I would also like to use this opportunity to remind everyone that if you feel sick, please don't ignore it, go to your GP, and search for answers; a prompt diagnosis can save your life. Moreover, please embrace life and make the most of every chance – because you never know what tomorrow will bring.

Finally, I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart all my friends, relatives, co-workers, and acquaintances who have been by my side in the last month. Your love and company are what help me to remain positive and strong.

Mi nombre es Claudia Viloria y tengo 32 años. Quizá algunos de ustedes me conocen, soy una de las co-fundadoras de Gals en Australia, una comunidad en línea que apoya a las mujeres latinxs que viven en Australia para encontrar empleo profesional.

En febrero de 2019, vine sola a Australia como estudiante internacional desde Colombia. Actualmente, vivo en Melbourne, y en los últimos años he conocido a personas increíbles que ahora he adoptado como mi familia: mis amigos.

Recientemente me diagnosticaron cáncer de linfoma linfoblástico de células T que se ha manifestado como un tumor de 11 centímetros ubicado en el tórax. El cáncer que tengo es agresivo y rara vez ocurre en personas de mi edad, por lo que la única opción que tengo de tratamiento en este momento es someterme a una compleja ronda de quimioterapia de 2 años.

La historia…

Después de mediados de agosto comencé a sentirme muy enferma, presentando síntomas como disfagia (dificultad para tragar), dificultad para respirar al acostarme, dolores de cabeza, dolor en el pecho y el cuello y un nudo en la garganta. Mi médico de cabecera inicialmente me diagnosticó problemas de tiroides y reflujo gastroesofágico. Sin embargo, antes de que pudiera asistir a mi próxima cita médica con un gastroenterólogo, el 9 de octubre después de cenar con una amiga no pude respirar por lo que ella llamó a una ambulancia, que me llevó a la sala de emergencias del Hospital Público St Vincent's – donde he sido admitido desde entonces.

Me hicieron varios exámenes que dieron como resultado el diagnóstico de linfoma linfoblástico de células T. Debido a la naturaleza agresiva de mi cáncer, comencé tratamientos intensivos de quimioterapia durante mi segunda semana de hospitalización. Sin embargo, dado que no soy ciudadana Australiana, mi seguro de salud privado solo cubrirá una cantidad mínima de los costos médicos asociados con mi tratamiento. Además, debido a que mi condición es potencialmente mortal, regresar a Colombia para recibir tratamiento no es una opción.

Mi única opción de tratamiento debido a la naturaleza rara y avanzada de mi diagnóstico son los siguientes protocolos de quimioterapia que pueden durar 2 años. A partir de ahora, estoy en el hospital hasta que se complete el protocolo I, y luego recibiré quimioterapia todas las semanas durante al menos 4 días.

Siempre que esté fuera del hospital, aún tendré que cubrir los costos médicos y de tratamiento, transporte, alimentos, alquiler, facturas y otros gastos de vida. Por lo tanto, les pido a todos ustedes que me ayuden con estos costos, especialmente con el tratamiento de quimioterapia que, con suerte, reducirá el tamaño de mi tumor. Mientras lucho contra el cáncer, cualquier ayuda que me puedan brindar, sin importar cuán grande o pequeña sea, será muy apreciada.

También me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para recordarles a todos que, si se sienten enfermos, no lo ignoren, acudan a su médico de cabecera y busquen respuestas; un diagnóstico oportuno puede salvarles la vida. Además, aprovechen al máximo cada oportunidad, porque nunca se sabe lo que traerá el mañana.

Finalmente, me gustaría agradecer desde el fondo de mi corazón a todos mis amigos, familiares, compañeros de trabajo y conocidos que han estado a mi lado en el último mes. Su amor y compañía son los que me ayudan a mantenerme positiva y fuerte.
