I was in the hospital waiting for little Clara Joy to join our family. It was a long dramatic night, but by morning I was snuggling a beautiful newborn and all seemed right.

 

Today I’m in the hospital again, snuggling that same newborn and wondering how our perfect baby could possibly have cancer growing inside of her.

 

There are days and weeks of treatment stretching out ahead of us. Chemotherapy and surgery and I don’t even know what else.

 

But on the night we light the advent candle of Joy, my heart returns to the gentle lyric about another Infant, the Infant who brings healing of both broken bodies and broken souls:

 

“Flocks were sleeping, shepherds keeping

vigil till the morning new

saw the glory, heard the story,

tidings of a gospel true.

Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow,

praises voicing, greet the morrow:

Christ the babe was born for you.”

 

And I know He is with us and all will be well.

Sorrow may endure the night, but Joy cometh on the morrow.

And that is enough for me.
