Our six-year-old daughter, Claire Tidwell, was struck by a stray bullet Monday, November 12 during a theft in Houston. Tuesday she underwent a two-hour surgery to remove the bullet, which was lodged in her leg.
While we were ordering food in a McDonald's drive-thru, we heard the sounds of gunfire as almost a dozen shots were fired right outside of our car. We ducked down and Claire shouted out "Daddy, I'm hurt!" When I turned to the backseat, I saw blood everywhere.
When she saw I was about to lose it as I struggled to stop the bleeding, she tried to reassure me: "Daddy, I'm OK. I'm going to be fine." Claire has shown more courage and strength than any six-year-old you could imagine.
Claire is now stable after her surgery, but the road to recovery ahead is long and expensive. We will post more details as they become available, but between the surgery, the follow-up treatments, the physical therapy, and more, we are facing tens of thousands of dollars in expenses in this difficult battle ahead.
Your support and prayers would mean the world to me and my family and will allow us to give Claire all of the support she needs. Anything you can give would make a big difference in helping us get through this extremely tough time.
*** Update *** We have returned home. Claire is still struggling with managing pain, learning how to use a walker to get around, and having to limit her physical activity. These are all challenges that no 6 year old should ever have to face. We appreciate the support that we have received and we ask for more prayers for our Claire Bear on her path to recovery. We really appreciate your support and love.http://www.fox26houston.com/news/girl-6-struck-by-stray-bullet-in-drive-thru-released-from-hospital https://abc7chicago.com/guard-who-accidentally-shot-girl-kept-missing-his-target/4687253/ https://www.newsweek.com/father-texas-girl-6-shot-mcdonalds-drive-thru-relives-horrific-moment-there-1214993
