Help CJ (Claire) kick leukemia’s butt!!

Donation protected
This unexpected whirlwind all began when CJ (Claire; they/them) went in for a routine blood test in January, which ended up showing unusual white blood cell counts. CJ was feeling fine and living life as normal – working from home, spending time with their wife Kelli and pups Maya and Olliver, and playing video games – so this information was surprising. CJ’s doctors did further testing to try to figure out what was going on, and at first they were stumped.

Then on Monday, February 22nd, CJ received a shocking diagnosis that explained the low blood cell counts: acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). That same day, CJ was admitted to Barnes Jewish Hospital/Washington University, where they will stay for a month receiving continual treatment including two forms of chemotherapy. After this month, their treatment will continue at home. Thankfully, the leukemia was found early and CJ’s prognosis is good, but receiving this diagnosis, and having this illness, will undoubtedly have many ripple effects on their life.

Many have asked how they can help during this challenging time. Costs will soon begin rolling in related to their extended hospital stay, testing, and Kelli’s travel to and from the hospital. CJ will be going on short-term disability leave from work; any funds raised will also help bridge the gap related to their lost wages and ease the burden of any other related or unforeseen expenses.

Another way to help during this time is by donating blood. CJ will be receiving blood regularly and has already gotten two full pints as of 2/24, so CJ says that folks can help “replenish” what they will be using by donating blood at your local blood bank. Regardless of whether you’re able to donate in one or both ways please keep CJ, Kelli and their family in your thoughts and prayers and send all those healing vibes as they journey through this. Thank you for your love and support!
