My name is Cindy, and I am a 62-year-old disabled woman who has faced more than my share of challenges. Seven years ago, I lost my leg below the knee, and since then, I have depended on a wheelchair for daily life. The pandemic made things even harder—I wasn’t able to get the medical care or therapy I needed, and I never learned how to use my artificial leg. Now, I can’t walk without a medical device, and my independence is limited.

I live alone in an older house, paying minimum rent, but the conditions have become unbearable. Mold is growing from the floor up and in every dark space, my bathroom and kitchen floors are deteriorating, and my bedroom ceiling is cracked all the way across. I have asthma and anxiety from all of this, and I worry every day about my safety. My landlord has told me he will raise the rent if he makes repairs, which I simply cannot afford on my disability income. I have tried everything I can to make things work, but my credit has suffered, and I have no one to turn to for help.

Recently, I found a new place to live that is safer and more affordable, but it’s three and a half hours away. I need help to rent a U-Haul, pay for gas, hire someone to help me move and unpack, and cover the deposits for utilities like water and gas. These are all expenses I cannot cover on my own.
