Accessibility Needs & Medical Expenses for Cindy
Donation protected
Dear Friends, Family, and Kind Supporters,
We are reaching out to you on behalf of Cindy, a remarkable individual who has faced more challenges in life than most. Cindy has been a dedicated public servant, a devoted caregiver, and a fighter through personal health struggles. Now, she needs our help to transform her living situation and regain a sense of independence.
Cindy's Story:
Cindy became permanently disabled in early 2002 after sustaining a back injury. Living on disability income forced Cindy to give up the life she had built in Northern Virginia, eventually landing her in the Northern Neck merely two weeks before her dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. There she cared for both of her parents through their cancer battles, dedicating ten years to their well-being until they passed away, and to the care for her oldest brother when he began his recovery from decades of alcohol abuse. Despite facing immense physical and emotional challenges, Cindy's resilience shone through.
In 2023, Cindy's struggles intensified when she attempted suicide due to the lack of support for her chronic pain. Thankfully, she survived, but the incident highlighted the urgent need for better accessibility and support in her life.
The Need:
Cindy resides in a basement apartment, which is not wheelchair-accessible. Efforts to renovate the dwelling in a timely and affordable manner have proven almost impossible. Therefore, Cindy is relocating to South Carolina and has secured an accessible apartment. The current details are as follows:
Cindy’s urgent need for financial support is dire! Due to Cindy’s current monetary situation and her inability to supplement her Social Security disability income at this time, the GoFundMe and a Friends & Family Funded Special Needs Trust being established for her will continue to be used to improve her quality of life and provide her with the independence she so deeply desires. The support will allow her to secure a safe and accessible apartment out-of-state, as her current location has been deemed by her medical team as a risk to her emotional and mental well-being. The funds will also assist with continued medical needs, and cover other costs associated with improving her independence and quality of life.
To ensure proper management of donations from you and others, I am establishing a Friends & Family Funded Special Needs Trust for Cindy, through which the GoFundMe donations will also be distributed. This trust will be administered by The Arc of Northern Virginia, enabling Cindy to access the funds as needed.
Cindy is unable to accept direct payments as they must be reported as additional income, which would disqualify her from certain medical assistance programs. Therefore, I kindly ask that any future donations be made through the GoFundMe itself, or payable to the Special Needs Trust as instructed below:
