Here's where moms story begins:
2/24/21: Mom's story begins last week after the snow storm. She called me and asked that I come and take her to the store. As soon as I saw my mom I realized something was off with her. She didn't seem like herself. I immediately made mom an appointment for the next day to discuss my concerns and have some blood work done on her. The doctor diagnosed mom with depression and said he would see us in a month. I immediately called my aunt and told her something wasn't right with mom. My aunt agreed and decided to take mom to spend the weekend with her.
03/01/21: On Monday, I made an appointment for mom to get her hair done. When I pulled up to get mom, I was shocked. Something was not right. Her shoes were on the wrong feet and her shirt was inside out. After her hair cut I had her do a cognitive test I learned about while working at UAMS. She bombed it. Thankfully my other aunt had texted me and asked for me to call her. We decided that we should take mom into the ER at UAMS. Due to COVID this was one of the hardest things I had to do. Drop mom off and sit out in the parking lot. I hated that mom was alone.
03/02/21: In the early morning hours on Tuesday the doctors told mom they were going to admit her and that they found a large tumor on the right side of her brain in the temporal area. Due to the swelling and size of the tumor they immediately started her on anti seizure medication and steroids. The doctors told mom they were planning on surgery to remove the tumor this week.
03/03/21: Wednesday we had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Day. If you've never heard his name before he is worth a google. Dr. Day is an internationally sought after neurosurgeon. He has published many books and articles on skull base surgeries. To say he is a decorated doctor is an understatement. Dr. Day explained to mom that he thought her tumor was a primary brain tumor. Meaning no other tumors were in her body. He also told mom that more than likely this was brain cancer, specifically Glioblastoma.
03/04/21: Mom underwent a 6 hr craniotomy to remove the tumor and was diagnosed with a high grade Glioblastoma. This is the fastest growing, most aggressive, and lethal form of brain cancer.
03/05/21: Overall mom is in pretty good spirits. She is having quite a bit of pain on the right side of her head. Unfortunately mom is having decreased moment and sensation on her left side. They can't really explain why that is. Her speech is a little slurred but again she's got weakness and loss of sensation on her left side. She also doesn't have any vision out of her peripheral field on the left side. They are hoping to discharge mom early next week to acute inpatient rehab.
Although this cancer will ultimately take moms earthly body from us. Treatment is needed to help prolong the quality of moms life. Treatment will likely include chemo, radiation, and possible immunotherapy.
I can not thank everyone enough for the out pouring love and support that everyone has showed our family. The funds from this account will go directly to the care of mom.
