My sister Cindy is a retired special education teacher who dedicated her career to serving students with disabilities, always advocating for inclusion, equity, and dignity. Even in retirement, Cindy continues to give back by volunteering with a local group that supports participatory democracy, working to ensure that everyday residents have a voice and that community values are not drowned out by corporate power and wealth.

Recently, while volunteering as a member of the safety team at a peaceful rally, Cindy encountered a popular right-wing social media influencer known for traveling the state and provoking liberal protestors. To alert others at the protest to this person's presence, Cindy used a whistle—a standard safety measure. Unfortunately, this influencer has since filed a claim alleging that Cindy's use of the whistle constituted an assault and caused hearing damage. This accusation is completely unfounded, but defending against it requires legal representation.

We will not be intimidated or discouraged from civic engagement by frivolous accusations meant to silence volunteers and organizers.
