On July 31st 2020, my sister Cielo went to the hospital after discovering a painful lump her left breast. This is when she was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Stage 2B. ER/PR (-) HER 2 (+).
Cielo is a 39-year old registered nurse and single mother to three children. She loves cooking, raising plants, kickboxing, and spending time with her beautiful kids: Cassandra, Guillan, and Jaime. She currently lives in Manila, Philippines and works at Makati Medical Center.
The Philippines has an inadequate health care system, and despite having a full-time job at the Medical Center she is forced to pay the cost of her chemotherapy and surgery out of pocket. Chemotherapy is estimated to cost $30,000 and surgery will cost another $30,000 (1.5 million Philippine pesos).
Cielo is deeply familiar with the hospital setting, spending her entire working career as a nurse in the operating room. Throughout the COVID19 crisis, Cielo spent her free time organizing mutual aid by raising money to provide masks, ventilators, and health care supplies for local hospitals in Manila. She has also organized countless food drives for those who are unable to work during the crisis and lack access to food in Manila.
Due to her preexisting severe asthma and recent cancer diagnosis, Cielo is forced to take a leave of absence from working at the hospital because she is at high-risk for developing a severe, or fatal infection of COVID19. The lack of work, combined with no system of insurance, makes her unable to raise money for her cancer treatment, and her family is now faced with large financial burdens resulting from vital medical treatments. Cielo is beginning a fight for her life, and for the future of her 3 children, making her road to recovery long and incredibly difficult.
This fundraiser has been established to raise money for life-saving treatments that Cielo and her family will not be able to afford otherwise. Cielo has given so much love, time, and energy to the healthcare system and those around her, and I am creating this fundraiser to give Cielo a bit of that love back to help her get through this time of sincere need,
With love and gratitude,
Reina, Cielo, and our mom Aida
