10/2 Status Update

Cici still requires tube feeding but is able to eat about 20 ml of chicken and rice on her own per meal. Hopefully, the test indicators will improve in tomorrow’s check-up.

The Story of Cici

One day, someone posted a picture of a 7 years old small dog named Cici on Nextdoor, saying her owner could no longer keep her. They didn’t explain why, only that she needed a new home. At the time, we had already adopted Bobo, our night-year-old senior dog, so we didn’t plan to adopt another.

A month later, I saw the same post again. Still, no one had taken Cici in. We worried she might be sent to a shelter and possibly euthanized. So we decided to take Bobo to meet her. On October 5, 2023, the two dogs met for the first time. Three days later, on October 8, we welcomed Cici into our family.

Her first night at home was rough. She had diarrhea for several days and needed a vet’s care before recovering. We cooked fresh meals for her, and she ate with so much joy that we spoiled her a little too much. Within six months, she went from six pounds to nine. After a reminder from the vet, we put her on a diet, which she didn’t like at first, but eventually accepted.

Cici joined us on adventures, like hiking up Royal Arch, where Sammy carried her down in a backpack when she grew tired. She was clever—lifting her paw when she stepped on something sharp, remembering the way home, and always wiping her mouth on the grass after eating. She walked and sat with elegance, though she trembled with fear during thunderstorms and would hide in the basement with Dad.

Now Cici is facing her biggest challenge yet. She unfortunately got leptospirosis, which is a bacterial infection that can cause kidney failure. She is currently hospitalized at CASE in Boulder and is receiving treatment around the clock. Due to her critically high kidney values, she has started dialysis. Even though she is sick, her gentle and graceful spirit remains.

We are prepared to spend whatever we can to get Cici home; however, the estimate for care for her with dialysis has gone up to $17,500. We are asking for help from our community to try to save our little girl.

Her kidney values were critically high at about 6x what they should be when she was admitted to the hospital, and now they are only about 3x what they should be.
