Help Christopher Ride a Bicycle Again
Christopher has suffered a rare spinal stroke and is a C7 quadriplegic. He is partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. The spinal stroke occurred at C6 ,C7 in the spinal column. Christopher has partial paralysis of his trunk resulting in weakness and instability of his upper body. Being unable to walk with very limited use of his left leg and no use of the right leg requires Christopher to rely on a wheelchair for mobility. He has partial loss of sensation from the collarbone down to his feet which includes loss of pain sensation and limited hot and cold sensation.
Christopher has been a life long athlete and bicycling has been a primary form of recreation and sharing with family and friends. I have biked with Christopher and members of his family over the last 30 years. Christopher's love of biking has also extended to others as he has always helped others bike whenever he could. I remember when the Trek across Maine which is a fund raiser for the Maine Lung Association started in the 1980's he volunteered as a mechanic for the first couple years. Christopher and I traveled for work many times and he rented a bicycle for transportation when we arrived instead of renting a car. He always carried tools and parts for repairing bikes and helped others in need when riding. Some people enjoy riding, Christopher loved it, He used to sing a silly song "All I want to do is ride my bike, ride my bike, ride my bike, all I want to do is ride my bike every day and night".
Fortunately the spinal stroke did not impair his brain. We are raising money to pay for an electric trike manufactured by the Outrider Company. The Outrider design team includes a quadriplegic and is designed for people who have had strokes and spinal injuries. There are specific requirements for a Trike for a person with these medical conditions. It must be easily accessible from a wheelchair. It must have high visibility for traffic. The seating must be stable providing support for a person with compromised trunk control and have a seat belt. The trike must be professionally engineered to be safe, reliable, and easy to operate for a rider with limitations in body function. It must have suspension to limit impacts on the body. Breaking down on the road in rural Maine would be a serious problem. Stability is also a major requirement. The Outrider was designed with people who have had spinal injuries and strokes in mind. The Outrider meets all of these requirements. There are less expensive trikes on the market, however they are not suitable for Christopher's unique requirements. The new Outriders expensive and delivery for new orders is February to March 2022.
Christopher is fortunate to have found a used 2016 Outrider Trike for $12,200.00.
Christopher has ridden his bicycle with friends and family and this has been a primary form of recreation his entire life.
Please help Christopher cycle once again! Thank you!
