Dear Friends,

As you may know, our loving friend Christine Grenon Place (Chris, Chrissie, Buttercup) is suffering from a progressive form of dementia. The onset was subtle, becoming more pronounced in early 2025 and rapidly progressing since that time. It goes without saying that this has taken an emotional toll on her family and loved ones, especially Jamie, her husband of 32 years. Their marriage was not without difficulties but their love for and commitment to each other always won. They are naturally giving people. When I think back to the early days, there was always a car in the driveway that Jamie was fixing for a friend while Christine was inside babysitting or cutting hair. They would charge very little to nothing for their services because they knew what it was like to struggle. I have never heard Christine utter a negative word about anyone or anything, a truly gracious person. She has always been the center of her family, hosting get-togethers to keep everyone connected. She is selfless and dependable, always sacrificing to provide for others. I see how the current situation paralyzes Jamie at times, not knowing what to do or focus on next, while watching the love of his life slip away. Despite this, he marches on, trying to make each day special and safe for Christine.

In addition to the emotional impact, they are suffering a financial burden. Christine was previously hospitalized for respiratory failure due to COVID, requiring a ventilator and a couple years later she suffered a medical event for which she required resuscitation - miraculously she survived both. They were still paying down the medical debts related to these events when the dementia set in, which came with a litany of tests, imaging, appointments. Until recently, they were still on Christine's health insurance with a high annual deductible and coinsurance percentage. With the loss of Christine's income and paid leave benefits, the previous and new debts (including daycare so that Jamie can continue to work) and future costs, the financial outlook is overwhelming.
