On April 30, 2023, Christina was hospitalized due to a severe Lupus Flare. Since her admission to the hospital, Christina's condition has recently taken a turn for the worse. She is now facing multiple life-saving procedures and surgeries and will require long-term care as she continues her fight. With this, she will suffer significant income loss to care for herself and her 9-year-old daughter. Her lived experience has led her to advocate for families and mothers of color in Michigan and across the country, using her power to make equitable changes in policy.
Here is Christina's Story:
Christina Hayes was just starting her journey as a college freshman at Eastern Michigan University when she received the news that would change her life forever. At the age of 19, she was diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disease. Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) is a rare autoimmune disorder that is characterized by features commonly seen in three different connective tissue disorders: systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, and polymyositis. Christina has been battling Lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that attacks the body's healthy tissues and organs.
But Christina was determined not to let Lupus define her. Instead, she became a fierce advocate for others with the disease, as well as for social justice issues.
As a young mother, Christina understood the challenges of balancing work and health. She joined the Mothering Justice organization to fight for paid sick leave for all workers, especially those with chronic illnesses like Lupus. Through her advocacy work, Christina was able to share her own story of navigating employment while dealing with the challenges of Lupus.
But Christina's passion for helping others didn't stop there. Along with her mother, Antoinette James, she founded "The Christina Project" to provide inspiration, comfort, and care to patients with Lupus and Lupus-related conditions who are hospitalized, as well as their families. Christina knew firsthand how important love and support are during hospital stays, and she wanted to give back to others who were going through the same experience.
Through "The Christina Project," Christina has brightened the lives of countless Lupus Warriors and their families. Her dedication to helping others and making a difference is an inspiration to all who know her. Christina Hayes may have been diagnosed with Lupus, but she has become a true Lupus Warrior, fighting for herself and others every day.
As many of you know, Christina is a fighter. She has always been strong and resilient and has faced every challenge that has come her way with grace and determination. But this time, she needs our help. The medical bills and costs associated with her treatment are staggering, and while she has insurance, it simply isn't enough to cover all of her expenses.
That's why we are asking for your help. Any donation, no matter how small, will help Christina pay for the medical care she needs to beat this disease. Your support will help her focus on her recovery and give her the peace of mind she needs to fight this battle.
We know that times are tough for everyone right now, but we also know that our community is strong and compassionate. Together, we can make a real difference in Christina's life. Please donate what you can, and share this campaign with your friends and family. Let's rally around Christina and show her how much we care.
Thank you for your generosity and support. Let's show Christina that she is loved, valued, and supported by her community and beyond.
