Help Christian Heal from Skull Fracture

Saturday, May 10th, 2025, was meant to be a day of pure birthday celebration for Christian and his friends: a fun-filled day at the skate park, followed by smash burgers, chips, cake, ice cream, and a movie night sleepover. We envisioned a carefree day, ending with happy, tired kids.
As some of you know, Christian had a skateboarding accident. The day started as planned. I dropped Christian and his friends off at the skate park, thinking they were set for an afternoon of fun. Then, a missed call from one of his friends, followed by that friend's dad pounding on our door as sirens sounded off nearby. The words hit me like a physical blow: "Christian is hurt. We gotta go now."
Arriving at the scene, the sight of Christian sitting on the ground, covered in blood, instantly sent a shockwave of fear through me, and was something no friend or parent should ever have to witness. Yet, amidst the chaos, he was alert, talking, even joking. The sheer wave of unbelievable relief that washed over me when he looked into my eyes and said with his smirky smile, "Hi!" is indescribable.
Shortly after, he was put in the ambulance; once they got situated, we followed behind to the hospital. At that point, we knew he had cuts on his head, hand, and elbow – all on his right side.
The ER doctor ordered a CT scan, and the news that followed was terrifying: a depressed skull fracture, pressing on his brain. Miraculously, he remained alert and communicative. A top neurosurgeon was called in, and another CT scan was ordered for a clearer picture.
Surgery became the immediate course of action: to clean the wound, remove bone fragments, and insert a titanium mesh. The two-hour surgery went well, and about 45 minutes later, we were able to see our boy again in his room. The neurological tests performed before and after surgery were both great and continued consistently throughout the night and the next day – every half hour, then every hour, then every two, then every four. Incredibly, by 9 pm, they had him walking around without assistance (with safety precautions in place), eating, and chatting with his friends before resting. The incredible medical team – from the paramedics to the ER staff, the neurosurgeon, and the nurses – acted swiftly and skillfully. We are eternally grateful for their expertise and care.
The next morning brought another reassuring CT scan. After a couple more doses of medication, we were able to bring Christian home later that day, collapsing into much-needed sleep that night. A follow-up appointment a couple of days later also went well. However, his recovery requires significant rest: no more school this year, limited screen time, and further follow-up appointments, including another CT scan in a couple of weeks.
This experience has been a stark reminder of how quickly things can change. From the depths of our experience, and our intention in sharing this, especially the more difficult parts, is this:
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE wear your safety gear. Whether it's a helmet at the skate park, on a bike, motorcycle, or doing any activity where your head is at risk – just wear it. You never know when an accident will happen or when that helmet might be the one thing that saves your life, or from serious injury, and saves your friends and family from unimaginable trauma. Wear the damn helmet!
Christian’s road to full recovery is still ahead, but we are beyond grateful that Christian is still with us. We cannot express enough thanks to everyone involved: the incredible doctors, nurses, paramedics, our supportive and loving friends and family, and every single person who has sent prayers our way. It truly takes a village, and we are so blessed to have all of you.
We truly believe in the power of prayer, and we have felt them working. Thanks be to God for answering all our prayers! Please continue to keep Christian in your prayers for complete healing and strength. Also, please pray for his friends to heal from this traumatic experience. They are such a great group of friends, and we have nothing but love for all of them. Thank you again to everyone. Your love and support mean the world to us. ❤️
