Our beloved Christa Hume has always been the person who shows up- no matter the hour, no matter the need, no matter how impossible it seems. Now, it is Christa who needs us.
It brings us great sadness to share that Christa has been diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer, which has metastasized to her liver and has been deemed inoperable. She is currently undergoing aggressive chemotherapy, but the standard treatments available locally are largely palliative, offering no options beyond symptom management.
Still, we believe there is hope for Christa and her family to enjoy the time and opportunities that present to her.
Christa and family, are actively exploring advanced and innovative treatment options that may offer her more time and improved quality of life. She is a potential candidate for specialized therapies that target advanced and end-stage cancers; options that are not available through conventional treatment pathways in Canada.
One such possibility is a world-renowned dendritic cell-based immunotherapy program in Germany, a cutting-edge approach that has shown promise for some patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. Another potential option is innovated treatment and potential surgery options at MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas, one of the world’s leading cancer research hospitals. MD Anderson is internationally recognized for its work in treating complex and late-stage cancers, including pancreatic cancer, through advanced research-driven clinical trials.
Christa and her family are in the process of applications and organizing these referrals and as we know, evaluations, further assessment and eligibility processes take time. Fundraising must begin now to ensure that if she is approved, finances are not the barrier that prevents her from pursuing proper and thorough care.
Both options would involve six figure costs, including treatment fees, travel, accommodations, and time away from work. The estimated costs are substantial, but these options represent something invaluable: a chance for more time, more life, and more moments with the people she loves.
Christa is not just fighting for herself - She is fighting for the network of people she is connected to.
Christa's community goes beyond that of a regular person. She is a counsellor, mentor, advocate, and safe place for countless children, youth, individuals, and families. She shows up for every client, every phone call, every late night, and crisis with warmth, patience, and unwavering care. From North Bay to Sault Ste. Marie to Hornepayne, her impact has been felt deeply by all who know her. Christa has held space for others during their hardest moments, and now we are holding space for her.
Christa is the heartbeat of a beautiful, close-knit family.
She is a devoted partner to Scott, who stands by her side through every challenge. She is an extraordinary mother to Hallee, her daughter and best friend, and to Trayton, who looks up to her as he follows his own path of helping and caring for others- just like his mom. Christa is their constant: every call, every late-night conversation, every moment they need her.
She is also a deeply loving Nana , who recently celebrated her grandson’s first birthday. Christa dreams of watching him grow, laughing with him, guiding him, and creating the memories only a Nana can offer.
Christa has poured her love into her family and her community. Now, she needs that love poured its our turn to pour that love into her.
