Help Chrissy with urgent medical expenses

Our friend Chrissy needs some help. She is one of the least likely people to ever ask for this kind of help, but she has been there for us so many times that we are now here to see if we can help her raise some money - to help offset a huge financial hit she took recently due to medical issues.

Please read the story and consider giving any amount you can to help her cause. Also please feel free to share it forward in case someone you know is able to contribute, financially and energetically, but at the very least can learn something from her journey.....

In 2019 / 2020, Chrissy started to experience symptoms, the biggest were weight gain and bloating. Knowing the Costa Rican health care system is inefficient (a recent report said "obstetrics" had a 581 day waiting period), she checked in with Google, and from what she found, determined it was simply perimenopause.

At this point, it was in the middle of the pandemic, and she was still thinking google was correct. It was just her body changing and the situation would be manageable.

But her discomfort grew more each day, and she finally had no choice but to see a doctor.

After getting a second opinion and having more expensive tests run, both doctors determined she had an exceptionally large fibroid tumor, and it was still growing. It was the largest her doctor had ever seen.

At about that same time she told her parents that she had been sexually assaulted when she was younger. Decades after the assault, researchers are finding that many women develop fibroids. This of course now weighing heavy on her emotionally, along with the physical discomfort.

The doctor recommended removal of the fibroid tumor through a complete hysterectomy and told her that not removing it would be life threatening if it burst.

All pre-surgery tests were normal. Surgery went well BUT:
A week later she was in the emergency room and admitted to the hospital for two weeks with:
  • Temps ranging between 95.6 and 104 degrees.
  • Severe sepsis
  • Severe anemia
  • Collapsed lungs - For 2 months she wasn’t able to talk, could barely breathe or lay down to sleep.
  • She was hooked up to oxygen and heart monitors.
  • Extreme body pain
  • Kidney infection
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Rapid 30+ pound weight loss
  • A hematoma that burst in the middle of the night, after being released from the hospital.
  • Several painful seromas
  • Digestion issues
  • Instant menopause and all it comes with
  • Plus the mental stress of watching all the money drain out of her bank account. The hospital staff came to her room every 2-3 days to charge her debit card.
  • And recovery that is ongoing as some of the above complications have not resolved.

When all was said and done, the final cost was nearly $40,000 out of pocket (and rising, as she is still incurring expenses for the ongoing complications). It will take many years to recoup that kind of loss.

Being on her own and so independent, before and after the hospital stay, she sold off about half of her furniture and other personal items. She applied for a loan but even with a pretty high credit score, she was denied because of her status as self-employed.

So we have set up this campaign to help her cover some of her expenses, which include:

  • Ongoing medical care for new problems that have arisen with her kidneys, lungs, GI and liver
  • Physical therapy for post sepsis syndrome and fibromyalgia
  • Household support to help her with cleaning and cooking, neither of which she is capable of doing easily or without pain. Nutrition is vital to her care, but it has become more difficult this last year.
  • Food, rent, utilities - her income has dropped drastically, which has affected her ability to be able to pay for regular "daily living" expenses

No amount is too small to help keep her from draining what’s left of her bank funds, faster than she can make enough money to cover her costs.

Unlike in the US, healthcare in Costa Rica is not something you get to pay off slowly. You have to pay your bills upfront - insurance or no insurance. That includes emergency care too.

Please consider anything you can contribute to help Chrissy. And of course, prayers and good energy are always welcome as well.

Sending you a heartfelt thank you!
