Hi, my name is Chris Turner. I am 7 months sober and currently in school to become an addictions worker. Recovery has given me a new chance at life, and my dream is to give back by helping others who are walking the same path I once did. I already volunteer as a peer navigator, supporting others in recovery, and I even run a group on codependency to help people rebuild healthier relationships.

Alongside recovery, I also live with PTSD and anxiety. Mental health struggles can be heavy, but one of the biggest parts of my healing journey has been my little kitten, Franky (or “Cranky Franky” when she’s hungry ).

I got Franky about 3 months ago, and from the very first moment we did skin-to-skin bonding, I knew she was meant to be in my life. When I’m overwhelmed with anxiety or struggling with my mental health, it’s like she can sense it. She puts her tiny paws on my cheeks, kneads gently, and the anxiety just melts away. She has become more healing to me than any medication ever has.

At first, Franky was supposed to split her time with my mom, but my mom developed a severe allergic reaction and could no longer keep her. Thankfully, a kind friend stepped in and has been taking care of Franky while I worked on getting permission to have her live with me full-time.

The good news is—I finally got that permission.

The challenge is that in order for Franky to come live with me, she needs to get her shots and be spayed first.

I live on a fixed income through disability, and while I’m doing everything I can to move forward in school and recovery, these unexpected costs are out of reach for me right now.
