Hi, I’m Nicole Holden – you may know me from your local veterinary hospital, Parkside Animal Hospital. If you don’t recognize me, you will certainly recognize Dr. Hailey Bertrand, and right now she and her husband Chris Sluman, need our help.
On January 4th, 2026, their world was shaken when they received the devastating news that Chris was diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. What first seemed like a bad flu he couldn’t shake, became a life-altering moment no one could have prepared for.
If you don’t know Chris, it won’t take you long to understand he’s the best kind of person. Chris is a farrier, spending long days caring for horses. He’s the first person you call when you need a hand or a friend, - a true “shirt-off-his-back” kind of guy. He’s quick to crack a joke, willing to try something new, he’s also a really good dad – like REALLY REALLY good.
Hailey is likely best known as your neighbourhood veterinarian. She radiates kindness and has a heart that seems endlessly big. She has spent years caring for our animals, supporting local families and giving so much of herself to this community. Together, Chris and Hailey are raising their bright and passionate 7-year-old daughter, Briar. Briar is a bright spot in every dreary day – bringing music, dancing and whimsy with her wherever she goes. Suddenly, their world has become filled with hospital visits, intensive treatments, uncertainty, and the emotional weight that comes with a cancer diagnosis.
As Chris begins aggressive treatment, he will be unable to work for the foreseeable future. Their family is now facing long hospital stays, overwhelming medical expenses, lost income, and the emotional toll of fighting cancer— all while trying to keep life as steady and loving as possible for their daughter. Chris will need to spend significant time away in both Sudbury and Ottawa for chemotherapy treatments and, eventually, a bone marrow transplant.
Many of you have already asked how you may help, this is SO appreciated. We are reaching out to you, our family, friends, colleagues and community for any financial contributions you’re able to donate. This fundraiser is about more than money - it’s about reminding Chris and Hailey that their Parkside Animal Hospital family and community are standing with them.
If you’ve ever trusted this family with your animals, crossed paths with them at a local event, or simply believe in taking care of your neighbours, this is a chance to give back.
Now they need OUR help. Let’s surround them with the same care, strength, and compassion they have given so freely.
Thank you all very much for any donation you’re able to give. If you’re not in a position to donate, please share this widely so we can surround them with a protective bubble of love!
