Like many, Chia-Li has had a very difficult Pandemic year, trying to stay afloat until the worst passed. On May 23, 2021, any chance at catching a break dimmed when Chia-Li went for a CAT Scan. Two growths were discovered. While still awaiting official results on the biopsies, she will still need surgery to remove both.
She is unable to return home or ask her family overseas for assistance; she needs support from friends and the kindness of strangers like you to recover from her losses and not fall further behind.
Chia-li has been our daughter’s piano teacher for over six years and has become a beloved member of our family. In addition to being a classically trained pianist and a devoted teacher, Chia-li is also a talented flower artist, gourmet chef, gardener, animal lover and an avid student.
Her steady gig as a piano teacher evaporated overnight as in-person lessons shut down and students already weary from full-day Zoom school were reluctant to continue piano studies virtually. Upgrading her technology to meet the new virtual needs was cost prohibitive, which compounded the difficulty in maintaining her student base. A secondary source of income, flower arranging, also dried up as social gatherings and parties halted. Ongoing car troubles make it difficult to commit to creating and delivering arrangements and endanger her new job working for a florist and at a local greenmarket.
Chia-li recently lost her home and position as live-in caretaker when her elderly landlords moved to Florida. She is trying to quickly find a new home for her herself while relocating her two cats, as most of her options do not allow pets.
In addition to the sudden and unexpected need for financial help to pay her upcoming cancer treatment bills, Chia-li has to cover rent and her tuition at SUNY Purchase where she is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies.
