Help Cheryl Restore Stolen Equipment For School
Donation protected
On 25 August 2019, in the middle of moving apartments in New York City, all of my camera equipment was stolen from the trunk of a friend's car after it was broken into. The camera bag had all of my 4 cameras--a professional DSLR, an SLR camera, a polaroid camera, a point and shoot film camera, their lenses, and films. A MacBook Pro laptop and charger. 3 hard drives that had all the work I have ever made as an artist and its backups--6 years worth of photographs and writings from all my travels and projects. The loss, quantitatively, was worth more than $5000.
I am a photographer and a writer based out of Brooklyn, New York, currently in the final year of MFA in Advanced Photography at the prestigious International Center of Photography on the ICP Director's Fellowship for two years. My work explores identity politics, mental health, memory with an emphasis on personal narratives. After the burglary, I have lost everything that made me feel worthy of being called an artist and brought me to New York from India in the first place.
I am the first person in my family to pursue a career in the arts. It has been frustrating, demoralizing, and upsetting to come to terms with the massive loss, especially being 3 months shy of putting up my thesis exhibition and book in the final year of school. It has been difficult to make new work because of not having basic equipment despite having been inspired to work on new ideas.
I am completely dependant on the scholarship and additionally a student loan to be able to finish school and continue to make work. I do not have the personal resources to recover the loss. The money raised would be used to cover the costs of a camera, film, a laptop, and storage devices. I would be immensely grateful for your generosity and kindness. I have been very thankful for my privilege of having a community that has, over the years, not only supported but also encouraged my work. Your trust in my work has helped me overcome years of doubt and months of creative blocks. This is the time I truly need help in any capacity for me to keep going, both mentally and creatively as the final semester in school approaches. Really, anything counts.

Thank you very much.
