On December 4, 2025, my life changed in an instant. At 74 years old, I was driving home with my granddaughter after a day of Christmas shopping in Portland. We stopped at Winco in Gresham, and as we were headed home, another car lost control and slammed into us—first from behind, then head-on into my passenger door. I immediately knew I was injured; my neck hurt, and I was badly shaken. My granddaughter, thankfully, was not physically hurt, but she was terrified by the crash. The driver who hit us apologized and admitted his tires were bald, but he only had proof of insurance at home. I trusted the police to handle everything, especially since I was taken away in an ambulance. But days later, I learned the police had filed nothing—no accident report, no tickets, no record at all. I was left with only a name and no way to hold the other driver accountable.

Living in a small town along the Columbia River, my car is my lifeline. I didn’t get my driver’s license until I was 40 because I was born with cataracts and had to wait for surgery. When I finally got my license, it gave me the independence I’d always dreamed of. Now, with my car unsafe to drive and no way to afford the repairs, I’ve lost my freedom. Public transportation here is limited, and I have to rely on others for every trip. I never imagined I’d be in this position, especially after a lifetime of being the one others depend on. The police’s inaction has left me devastated and without options.

It would be so deeply appreciated for any and all help you might give. I just have to find a way out of the mess and position the police have placed me in.
