Help Chembe Village Access Safe Drinking Water: A Personal Project by Finn

Hello, my name is Finn, and I am a Grade 10 IB MYP student at Millwood School. As part of my personal project this year, I’m working on a cause that is deeply meaningful to me: bringing safe, reliable drinking water to Chembe village in Malawi.

This project was inspired by my friend Cos Phiri from Malawi, who recently raised funds to provide his own village with access to clean water. After learning about his efforts, I knew I wanted to do something similar to help another community in need.

Why Chembe Village?

Chembe village, located north of Lilongwe city, is home to over 1,000 people but has never had a properly drilled well. The villagers rely on a hand-dug well, which does not provide safe drinking water. During the dry months of October and November, the situation becomes even more dire. Women and children often wake up as early as 3:00 am to collect water as the water table drops, leading to long, exhausting hours and worsening health risks.

This lack of access to safe water has far-reaching consequences:

• Health Risks: Unsafe water increases the risk of waterborne diseases.

• Safety Concerns: Women and children, while fetching water at odd hours, face the threat of sexual assault, harassment, and domestic violence.

• Education Impact: Children frequently arrive late to school or miss school entirely because they cannot bathe or access water. This leads to school dropouts and poor academic performance.
